Rekosistem App— Consumer Recycling & Sustainability Platform
Rekosistem · Frontend Engineer
Consumer-facing mobile application connecting communities across Indonesia with digital waste collection services and sustainability programs — available on Android and iOS.

Overview
The Rekosistem consumer app is the public face of Rekosistem's sustainability platform — the product that over 90,000 individuals use to participate in responsible recycling, schedule waste pickups, locate drop points, and track their personal environmental impact. It is the entry point through which households and individuals connect with the broader circular economy ecosystem that RekoHub and Reko Mitra power from the inside.
Problem
Responsible recycling in Indonesia has historically been inaccessible for most households. The infrastructure existed — waste stations, collection services, recycling programs — but without a simple consumer interface, participation remained low. The gap was not physical but digital: most people simply had no easy way to engage with sustainable waste management services.
Solution
The Rekosistem app strips away that barrier with a clean, mobile-first consumer experience. Users can schedule pickups, find the nearest Reko Station, earn incentives for responsible disposal, and see their cumulative environmental contribution. The app integrates directly with Rekosistem's operational backend — a pickup scheduled in the consumer app flows immediately into the field team's Reko Mitra queue.
Architecture
React Native and Expo deliver a single codebase for Android and iOS, with EAS Build handling store submissions for both platforms. MobX manages reactive application state — its observable/computed pattern works well for the real-time status updates (pickup confirmed, in transit, completed) that keep users informed throughout the service flow. Firebase handles push notifications and real-time event delivery. REST API integration connects to Rekosistem's Go backend for all transactional operations.
Lessons learned
Consumer mobile UX demands a higher standard of performance and polish than internal enterprise tools. Users compare the app to every other consumer app on their phone — the bar is set by Instagram and Grab, not by internal dashboards. Investing heavily in perceived performance (optimistic UI updates, skeleton loading states, smooth transitions) was as important as correctness. The app's rating on the Play Store and App Store reflects that investment directly.
